The story behind the character
最
最 is 冃, a cap, over 取, to take. Xu Shen wrote 最, 犯而取也: to seize by force. Nothing about being the most. That superlative sense came in from a different character, 冣, which meant to pile up and got written as 最. So 最好 rests on a character that once meant grabbing something against resistance.
