The story behind the character
比
Two people standing side by side. 比 is 人 written next to a reversed 人. Xu Shen explained the difference between it and 从 in one line: 二人為从, 反从為比. Turn 从 around and you get 比. Two people shoulder to shoulder, close together, which is why 比 means to compare: hold two things up next to each other and see which is taller.
