The story behind the character
太
太 means "too," as in more than you want: 太贵了 too expensive, 太大了 too big, 太累了 too tired. Notice the 了 on the end. 太 almost always drags 了 along, and a bare 太贵 sounds unfinished. The exception is set phrases like 太好了 and 太棒了, where it flips to plain enthusiasm, closer to "so" than "too." Everywhere else, 太 is you complaining.
