Food Words in Chinese

The vocabulary is small, but two of these words carry meanings English splits into several.

吃饭 does not mean “eat rice.” It means “eat a meal” — and once you know why, a lot of Chinese food vocabulary falls into place.

菜 is both “vegetable” and “dish”

菜 cài covers vegetables and cooked dishes at once. 点菜 is to order dishes at a restaurant, not to order vegetables. 这个菜很好吃 means “this dish is delicious.”

If you want to be specific about vegetables, say 蔬菜 — but in everyday speech, context does the work.

吃饭 is about the meal, not the rice

饭 fàn originally meant cooked grain, and rice was the default grain. The word widened to mean “a meal” — so 吃饭 is “eat,” as in “have a meal,” regardless of what is on the table. This is why 饭店 is a restaurant (or a hotel), not a rice shop.
