The story behind the character
门
门 was a doorway with two leaves. The traditional 門 is a pair of doors facing each other, while a single leaf was 户. Xu Shen wrote 門，聞也, because a doorway is where you hear what is going on outside. The simplified 门 comes from the cursive way people actually wrote it.
