The story behind the character
进
进 is a path (辶) with 隹, a short-tailed bird, on top. Xu Shen glossed it as 进, 登也, "to advance, to go up." The old picture is a bird on the move, and a bird faces one way only. The simplified character traded the bird for 井, which sounds like jìn and cost the character its image.
