The story behind the character
黑
Xu Shen described 黑 as the color smoke leaves behind: 黑, 火所熏之色也. Fire below, chimney above, soot in between. The earliest forms look like a person with a blackened face, dots marking the smudges. However you read it, this is a character about what fire does to whatever it touches.
