The story behind the character
他
他 is 亻, a person, next to 它, which is there only for its sound. 它 began life as a drawing of a snake, but in 他 it does no work beyond the pronunciation. The character first meant "other", as in 其他, and only later settled into "he". When you write 他, you draw a person and a sound.
