The character 狗
Chinese has two characters for dog. 犬 (quǎn) is the older, and appears in oracle-bone inscriptions as a dog standing in profile with its tail up. 狗 (gǒu) is the later form, pairing the animal radical 犭 with 句 for the sound. Both are still in use: 犬 is the formal or classical word, 狗 the everyday one.
