The story behind the character
鱼
鱼 is a fish standing up. Head at the top, body through the middle, tail at the bottom, with fins poking out both sides. The traditional 魚 shows the whole animal. The simplified 鱼 dropped the fins and kept the silhouette. Xu Shen called it 水虫也, the creature of the water, which is about as plain as a definition gets.
