About this word
事 is an affair or a piece of business, 情 is the circumstances around it, the way things stand. A 事情 is a matter with its details attached. 事 on its own is bound and vague in modern speech, so 事情 is what people actually say: 我有很多事情要做, 这是一件小事. The 情 goes neutral tone, qing, which is the signal that it is doing grammatical work rather than carrying its own meaning.
The story behind the character
事
事 is a hand holding a brush or a tally. It is the same picture as 史, a record keeper, and 吏, an official. Xu Shen grouped them and wrote 事,職也: a duty, a post. So a "thing" in Chinese starts out as a job somebody has to do, and only later became everything that happens.
情
情 is 忄 (heart) with 青 riding along to supply the sound. Xu Shen defined it as 人之阴气有欲者, the heart's wanting, the part of you that gets moved. That sense rides along in 事情. A 事情 is not a bare fact sitting there on its own. It's a matter with someone's feelings attached, which is why it can be 好 or 坏.
