The story behind the character
男
男 is 田 (field) sitting on top of 力, which here is a plow. Xu Shen spelled out the logic: 言男用力於田也, a man puts his strength into the field. That was the whole job description of a man in a farming society, written into the character. Field plus plow equals man.
