The story behind the character
慢
慢 is 忄, the heart, plus 曼 for the sound. Xu Shen wrote 慢, 惰也: lazy, slack, careless. That was the first meaning, a laziness of the heart. Slowness attached itself later, probably because a lazy person moves slowly. So 慢 in 慢走 is closer to the old sense than you would guess, and 快 is its old opposite.
