The story behind the character
还
还 is 辶, walking, with 不 in the simplified form carrying the sound; the traditional 還 used 瞏. The original meaning is to go back, to return, read huán, as in 还书, return a book. From going back it drifted into still, yet, again, read hái. Two jobs, and the walking belongs to the older one.
