The story behind the character
给
糸, silk thread, on the left, with 合 on the right giving the sound. Xu Shen wrote 給, 相足也: to make sufficient, to supply what is lacking. Silk was the good stuff in ancient China, so a character about handing out thread was a character about making sure someone had enough. Later it simply meant to give. 给你, 送给, 给我.
