The story behind the character
住
住 is 亻, a person, with 主 supplying the sound. It is a later character, showing up in dictionaries well after the Han. The shape carries two jobs: to live somewhere, as in 我住在北京, and to stop, as in 站住. A person standing still is a person who lives there.
