About this word
前 means "front" and 面 means "face, side". Together they make "the front side", and this is how Chinese names every direction: 后面 (back side), 里面 (inside), 上面 (on top), 外面 (outside). Adding 面 turns a position into a place you can actually stand in. So 前面 works as a location on its own (商店在前面, the shop is up ahead) and also attaches to a noun with 的 (房子前面有一棵树, there is a tree in front of the house).
The story behind the character
前
The traditional 前 is 止 (foot) over 舟 (boat). A person on a boat, feet pointing ahead. It meant "to advance."
面
面 is a face with an eye in the middle. Xu Shen wrote 面, 颜前也. The front of the head. Only later did it stretch to mean "side" or "noodle."
