The story behind the character
那
那 points at something away from you: 那个人 that person, 那本书 that book, 那是什么 what is that. 这 is for what is near, 那 for what is far, the same split as this and that. Mind the tone: 那 nà is "that," 哪 nǎ is "which," and the two characters look nearly identical. In speech 那个 doubles as filler, roughly English "um," so it turns up far more than textbook examples suggest.
